  • PhDs

    The PhD degree shall be awarded by means of a doctoral process initiated at the request of the applicant for the degree.

    The  process shall be subject to the possession of a scientific publication published or accepted for printing in the form of a book or at least one scientific publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal listed in the list of scientific journals published by the Minister responsible for science in accordance with the provisions adopted pursuant to Article 10. Whereas Article 44 (2) of Regulation (EEC) No 2 2 of the Act of 30 April 2010 on the principles of financing science (Journal of Laws No. 96, item 615, as amended) or in peer-reviewed materials from an international scientific conference or a public presentation of artistic work.

    The doctorate can be pursued by a person who:

    • Holds a master’s degree, master’s degree in engineering,  a doctorate or other equivalent, or holds the diploma referred to in Article 10(1) of Directive 91/414/EEC; Whereas Article 191a (1) of the Treaty provides that the Community may adopt measures 3 and 4 of the Law of 27 July 2005. -Law on higher education;
    • Has passed doctoral examinations to the extent specified by the board of the organizational unit;
    • Presented and defended the doctoral dissertation;
    • Has passed an examination in a modern foreign language or holds a certificate attesting to knowledge of a modern foreign language, as defined in the provisions adopted pursuant to Article 10( 1) of Directive 70/156/EEC; Article 31(5) shall be replaced by the following:

    The doctoral dissertation, prepared under the supervision of the supervisor (Polish: promotor) or under the supervision of the supervisor (Polish: promotor) and the auxiliary supervisor (Polish: promotor pomocniczy) referred to in Article 10, shall be held in accordance with the procedure referred to in Article 14(2). Whereas Article 20 (2) of Regulation (EEC) No 2 should be an original solution to a scientific problem or an original artistic performance and demonstrate the applicant’s general theoretical knowledge in the scientific or artistic discipline concerned and the ability to carry out scientific or artistic work on his own.

    A doctoral dissertation may take the form of a manuscript of a book, a book published or a coherent thematic set of chapters in books published, a coherent thematic set of articles published or accepted for printing in scientific journals, as defined by the Minister responsible for science under the rules on the financing of science.

    A doctoral dissertation may be a design, construction, technological or artistic work.

    A doctoral dissertation may also constitute an independent and separate part of the collective work if it demonstrates the individual contribution of the candidate in the development of the conception, the performance of the experimental part, the development and interpretation of the results of that work.

    With the consent of the board of the conducting body, the doctoral dissertation may be presented in a language other than Polish.

    The doctoral dissertation should be summarised in English, and the doctoral dissertation prepared in a foreign language should also be summarised in Polish.

    An applicant for a doctoral degree shall submit an application to the head of the organisational unit for the initiation of a doctoral process.

    The candidate shall attach the following documents to the application for the initiation of the doctoral process:

    • A copy of the document attesting to the possession of the professional title referred to in Article 10(1) of Regulation (EC) No 1782/2003 certified by the organisational unit as stated in Article 12 (1) of Regulation (EEC) No 2 Article 1(1) of the Law of 14 March 2003 on the degrees and academic titles and the degrees and title in the field of the arts, hereinafter referred to as “the Law”, or the diploma referred to in Article 10(1) of Directive 91/414/EEC; Whereas Article 191a (1) of the Treaty provides that the Community may adopt measures 3 and 4 of the Law of 27 July 2005 – Law on higher education (Journal of Laws of 2012, item 572, as amended, as amended) );
    • A proposal for the topic and the concept of the doctoral dissertation indicating the area of knowledge, the field of science or the art and scientific or artistic discipline for which the doctoral dissertation is to be opened, suggesting who the supervisor should be, and  indicationg additional discipline;
    • A list of scientific works, creative professional works, or artistic achievements, together with an appropriate record of the artistic works and documentation of their public presentation and information on activities promoting science;
    • information on the course of the doctoral studies if the candidate has previously applied for a doctoral degree in the same scientific or artistic discipline.

    The applicant may attach the following to the application for the initiation of the  doctoral process

    • A copy of the certificate confirming knowledge of the modern foreign language certified by the organisational unit;  the list of certificates attesting to knowledge of a modern foreign language is set out in Annex 1 to the Regulation;
    • An application for consent to the presentation of a doctoral dissertation in a language other than Polish.

    As of 1 October 2019, in accordance with the Act of 20 July 2018 Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws 2018, item 1668), the degree of Doctor of Habilitation is awarded by habilitation proceedings, initiated on request to the habilitating entity through the Scientific Excellence Council.

    A person who holds a Doctorate degree and scientific or artistic achievements obtained after receiving a doctorate degree, which constitutes a significant contribution of the author to the development of a particular scientific or artistic discipline and exhibits significant scientific or artistic activity, may be admitted to habilitation proceedings.

    The rules for conducting proceedings on the award of the degree of doctor of habilitation, for which the habilitating entity is the Rector of SGGW, are laid down in the Regulations introduced by Resolution No. 9 – 2019/2020 of the Senate of the Warsaw School of 23 September 2019.

    An application for the initiation of the process shall be made in accordance with the requirements of Article 18 of Regulation (EC) No 1782/2003. Article 220 (2) section 2 of the Treaty provides that it must be submitted together with the annexes (attachments) to the Scientific Excellence Council.

    The following documents shall be submitted:

    1. A  proposal indicating the field and discipline in which the candidate is applying for a degree and the habilitating entity selected to carry out the procedure.

    1. A copy of the document confirming the possession of the doctoral degree, verified by the habilitating entity.
    2. A Summary of Professional Accomplishments describing the professional career and relevant scientific or artistic activity carried out in more than one university, scientific institution or cultural institution, in particular international ones, together with copies of documents confirming certain achievements, in particular concerning scientific placements, grants, and publications resulting from research in more than one scientific unit.

    Summary of Professional Accomplishments 

    1. A list of scientific or artistic achievements which make a significant contribution to the development of a particular discipline.

    List of achievements

    The following can be classified as achievements:

    1. (a) a scientific monograph issued by a publishing house which, in the year of publication of the monograph in its final form, was included in a list drawn up in accordance with the provisions adopted pursuant to Article 11; In this case, the Commission shall inform the Member States and the Commission thereof. 
    2. (b) a series of thematically related scientific articles published in scientific journals or in peer-reviewed material from international conferences which, in the year of publication of the article in its final form, was included in a list drawn up in accordance with the provisions adopted pursuant to Article 267(2)(2)(a) of the Basic Regulation.b Act
    3. (c) the original design, construction, technological or artistic achievement realized.

    At the same time, the Council of Scientific Excellence reminds that in the proceedings to award the degree of habilitated doctor, initiated in the period from October 1, 2019 to December 31, 2020, to the achievements referred to in Art. 219 paragraphs. 1 (2)(b) of the Act also includes:

    1. scientific articles published:

    1. (a) in scientific journals or peer-reviewed material from international conferences included in a list drawn up in accordance with provisions adopted pursuant to Article 11; Article 267 (2)(b ) before the date of publication of that list,
    2. b) before 1 January 2019, in scientific journals that were included in part A or C of the list of scientific journals established on the basis of regulations issued on the basis of art. 44 sec. 2 of the act repealed in art. 169 point 4 of the Act of July 3, 2018. Provisions introducing the Act – Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws of 2018, item 1669, as amended) and announced in the announcement of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of January 25, 2017 r. or were included in part B of this list, where scientific articles published in them were awarded at least 10 points; 2) scientific monographs published by:
    1. 1. a) a publishing house included in the list drawn up in accordance with the regulations issued under Art. 267 paragraph. 2 point 2 lit. and of this act, before the date of publication of this list, 2. b) organizational unit of the entity whose publishing house is included in the list drawn up in accordance with the regulations issued under Art. 267 paragraph. 2 point 2 lit. and this act. 3. If the scientific or artistic achievement is an independent and separate part of a collective work that has more than five co-authors, the postdoctoral candidate shall submit a statement specifying his individual contribution to the work and statements of at least four other co-authors. The postdoctoral researcher is released from the obligation to submit a declaration in the event of the death of a co-author, declaring him deceased or his permanent health impairment which prevents obtaining the required declaration.

    Co-author’s statement

    The annexes to the application require the signature of the person submitting habilitation thesis.

    The application and its annexes shall be submitted to the RDN (Rada Doskonałości Naukowej – The Scientific Excellence Council) in paper  (1 copy) and in electronic form (2 copies – preferred data carrier “flash drive”).

    Copies of documents stored on an electronic data carrier must constitute a full digital reproduction of the paper documentation, i.e. a copy of the documents stored on the electronic data carrier. they must be the same (identical) to the paper form and the original signatures on them.

Promotion proceedings

  • Professor's position

    Establishing an employment relationship with an academic teacher at SGGW, for a limited or indefinite period, on the basis of an employment contract, to the extent exceeding half of the full working time, in the cases provided for by the Act of Dec. 20.07.2018 The law on higher education and science (Journal of Laws 2018, item 1668) follows an open competition, in accordance with the principles set out in Annex 1 to the Statutes of the SGGW. In the case of an academic teacher holding the title of professor, employed full-time, an employment relationship may be established on the basis of appointment.

    The competition 

    The competition for the position of professor is announced by the Rector at the request of the Director of the Institute: the proposal should be reviewed by the Board of Discipline. The competition may be announced once the need and employment opportunities have been identified and the qualification requirements necessary for taking up the post have been identified. It is for the Rector or the Director to declare that these conditions have been met.

    The publication of a competition for the position of professor in a specific field, discipline, and scientific specialty (the content of which is accepted by the Rector through the Section of The Science Service of the Office of Science and National Projects) shall be published on the websites of the University, the office serving the Minister responsible for higher education, as well as on the websites of the European Commission, in the European portal for mobile researchers, intended for the publication of job vacancies for researchers. The competition can also be notified by posting on the territory of SGGW (bulletin boards of SGGW, faculty, cathedral) and sending notices to related departments of other universities and related scientific institutions in the country.

    Promotion

    In accordance with the principles set out in the Statute of the SGGW and the Act, academic teachers may be promoted by the Rector:

    1. on their own initiative, after consulting the dean and the board of the faculty or the head of the non-departmental unit,
    2. at the request of the Dean, the board of the faculty in which the academic teacher to be promoted is employed,
    3. at the request of the head of the non-departmental unit in which the academic teacher to be promoted is employed

    Each time, the Rector decides on the promotion of academic teachers to use one of the two procedures laid down in the Statutes:

    1) competition,

    2) non-competition,

    taking into account that, in those procedures, the Rector shall also take into account the following requirement:

    – a person who has contributed to a positive parametric assessment of the SGGW organisational unit in which he/she is employed, may be promoted to the post of professor by taking into account his/her scientific achievements in the score consisting of the category awarded to that body.

    Non-competition procedure

    The Rector shall, when promoted academic teachers, be guided by the principles set out in the Statute and in the Act and shall take into account in particular:

    1) the entire achievements of the academic teacher, including previous scientific achievements in the case of scientific and scientific-didactic staff, and in the case of teaching staff didactic achievements and evaluation referred to in § 144 of the Statute;

    (2) the need to stabilize and develop the faculty/non-faculty staff in which the academic teacher to be promoted is employed;

    3) directions and pace of development of SGGW.

    Before deciding on the promotion of academic teachers, the Rector may ask experts, including those outside the SGGW, to express an opinion on a particular candidate or may set up an advisory panel for this purpose.


    As a professor at SGGW may be employed a person who:

    1. has a scientific title,
    2. demonstrates a distinguished, internationally recognised scientific achievement in the specialties represented, a scientific acquis positively assessed by at least 2 reviewers with a scientific title, including 1 from outside the SGGW,
    3. is the author or co-author, after obtaining a scientific title, of at least 5 scientific monographs and/or scientific publications that have appeared in scientific journals published in the list of the relevant Minister for Scientific Research; higher education, in Part A, which contains the number of points for publications in scientific journals with an iImpact Factor (IF), indexed  in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) database, along with the number of points awarded for scientific publications in these journals. In the area of social sciences, he/she is the author or co-author, after obtaining a scientific title, of at least 5 scientific monographs and/or scientific publications, including at least 3 in scientific journals published in the list of the relevant Minister for Scientific Research; higher education, in Part A or C, containing the number of points for publications in scientific journals with an Impact Factor (IF) in the journal Citation Reports (JCR), the European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH) and the number of points awarded for scientific publications in those journals,
    4. has obtained in the last 4 years scientific activities evaluated on the basis of scientific monographs and/or scientific publications which have appeared in journals listed by the Minister for Science and/or scientific publications in one of the publication listed by the  Minister for Science, together with the number of points awarded for scientific publications in those journals and the score for scientific monographs, the total number of points awarded for those scientific publications and/or monographs at least 50% higher than the threshold set by the Rector for his last post in accordance with the rector’s order on the minimum number of points necessary to obtain a positive assessment of the scientific and organisational activities of an academic teacher in the SGGW,
    5. direct or direct a research project obtained in the context of a competition by research funding bodies, e.g. National Science Centre (NCN), National Centre for Research and Development (NCBiR), government offices, the European Commission,
    6. has documented and proven scientific cooperation with leading research centres in Poland and abroad,
    7. demonstrates an achievement in the training of scientific staff and has been a supervisor of at least 3 successful doctoral thesis,
    8. participates actively in the training of scientific staff, is the leader of the research team, supervises and supports the research of people starting a scientific career,
    9. has significant teaching achievements, e.g. conducts classes/lectures for doctoral students, is the author or co-author of academic textbooks or scripts,
    10. has at least a good knowledge of English (documented), i.e. to the extent that scientific publications in that language can be written on their own and reported at scientific conferences,
    11. additional requirements (specific research, teaching or organisational objectives and tasks) will be set out in the terms of the competition.

  • Position of professor of the university

    Establishing an employment relationship with an academic teacher in SGGW, for a limited or indefinite period, on the basis of an employment contract, to a dimension exceeding half of the full working time, in the cases provided for by the Act of Dec. 20.07.2018 The law on higher education and science (Journal of Laws 2018, item 1668) follows an open competition, in accordance with the principles set out in Annex 1 to the Statutes of the SGGW.

    Contest

    The competition for the post of professor of the university is announced by the Rector at the request of the Director of the Institute: the proposal should be given an opinion by the Board of Discipline. The competition may be announced once the need and employment opportunities have been identified and the qualification requirements necessary for taking up the post have been identified. It is for the Rector or the Director to declare that these conditions have been met.

    The publication of a competition for the post of professor of higher education in a specific field, discipline and scientific speciality (the content of which is accepted by the Rector through the Section for The Service of Science of the Office of Science and National Projects) shall be published on the websites of the University, the office serving the Minister responsible for higher education, as well as on the websites of the European Commission, in the European portal for mobile researchers, intended for the publication of job vacancies for researchers.     Promotion

    In accordance with the principles set out in the Statute of the SGGW and the Act, academic teachers may be promoted by the Rector:

    1. on his own initiative after consulting the director of the institute and the board of discipline or the head of the non-departmental unit,
    2. at the request of the Director of the Institute, the board of discipline in which the academic teacher to be promoted is employed,
    3. at the request of the head of the non-departmental unit in which the academic teacher to be promoted is employed,

    Each time, the Rector decides on the promotion of academic teachers to use one of the two procedures laid down in the Statutes:

    1) competition,

    2) non-competition,

    taking into account that, in those procedures, the Rector shall also take into account the following requirement:

    – a person who has contributed to a positive parametric assessment of the organisational unit of the SGGW in which he is employed may be promoted to the post of professor of the hei hemisphere by taking into account his scientific achievements in the score which makes up the category awarded to that body.

    Non-competition procedure

    The Rector shall, when promoted academic teachers, be guided by the principles set out in the Statute and in the Act and shall take into account in particular:

    1) the entire achievements of the academic teacher, including previous scientific achievements in the case of scientific and scientific-didactic staff, and in the case of teaching staff didactic achievements and evaluation referred to in § 144 of the Statute;

    (2) the need to stabilise and develop the faculty/non-faculty staff in which the academic teacher to be promoted is employed;

    3) directions and pace of development of SGGW.

    Before deciding on the promotion of academic teachers, the Rector may ask experts, including those outside the SGGW, to express an opinion on a particular candidate or may set up an advisory panel for this purpose.

    As a professor of SGGW can be employed a person who:

    (a) has at least a Doctorate degree and demonstrates a distinguished and internationally recognised scientific achievement in the specialties represented, assessed positively by at least two reviewers with the title of professor, including at least one from outside the SGGW, appointed by the Rector on his own initiative or at the request of the Director of the Institute,

    b) is the author or co-author of at least 20 scientific monographs and/or scientific publications as defined in § 87 para 1 and 2 of the Statute of the SGGW and the patents applied for, as referred to in § 87 para. 4 of the Statute of the SGGW,

    (c) in the last four years  has obtained  the total number of points awarded for scientific publications or scientific monographs from scientific activities at least 50% higher than the threshold set by the Rector for the last post held by that person in accordance with the relevant Rector’s order on the minimum number of points necessary to obtain a positive assessment of the scientific and organisational activities of an academic teacher at the SGGW,

    (d) have completed a total of at least three months of scientific training abroad in scientific centres,

    (e) was a principal investigator in a research project obtained directly or indirectly in the context of a competition by research funding institutions or  a research task obtained in a partner project within the framework of a competition by the research funding institutions,

    (f) has a documented educational record, in particular a proven high quality of teaching activities or the authorship of textbooks,

    (g) has a scientific training record and has been or is a promoter or promoter in at least one doctoral or doctoral course,

    (h) have at least a good knowledge of English, to the extent that it allows them to write scientific publications in that language on its own and to report to scientific conferences,

    (i) meet additional requirements, including specific research, teaching, or organisational objectives and tasks, as defined in the terms of the competition;

  • Scope of activities of the section

    The scope of the Science Service Section of the Office of Science and National Projects shall include:

    1) verification of doctoral and habilitation documents and keeping records of degrees awarded, issuing certificates of scientific degree;

    (2) conducting matters relating to the appointment/recruitment of staff as Professor of the SGGW and as professor;

    (3) drawing up regulations, regulations, resolutions and guidelines for the organisation of doctoral studies established before the academic year 2019/2020;

    (4) keeping records of doctoral studies established before the academic year 2019/2020 and records of the course of study of individual doctoral students of those studies, including the keeping of personal files;

    (5) day-to-day operation of the database of doctoral candidates established before the academic year 2019/2020, including data entry and updating, generation and printing of reports;

    6) documentation support of the “Implementation Doctorate” programme, which includes doctoral candidates established before the academic year 2019/2020;

    (7) supporting the preparation of proposals for the programme of the Minister responsible for higher education and science on scholarships for young eminent researchers and the handling of documentation;

    (8) monitoring the disbursement of funds from the budgets allocated to scholarships for doctoral candidates established before 2019/2020, including the preparation of scholarship lists;

    (9) conducting health insurance cases for doctoral students who have started their studies before 2019/2020;

    (10) issuing certificates relating to the completion or completion of doctoral studies established before the academic year 2019/2020, including for pension purposes;

    (11) registration of scientific conferences;

    (12) assisting institutes in preparing documents for parametric evaluation of scientific disciplines and periodic evaluation of academic teachers;

    (13) the acceptance of legal statements concerning scientific activities and the keeping of a register of those statements;

    (14) keeping SGGW staff informed of newly opened competitions under the programmes and projects of the Minister responsible for higher education and science and to assist institutes in preparing applications for these competitions;

    (15) reporting on research activities for the needs of the authorities and public statistics services, including the preparation of the Rector’s Annual Report on the basis of the material submitted by the relevant SGGW units;

    (16) gathering the information necessary to monitor the implementation of the University’s research strategy;

    17) organizational support of senate committees designated by the Rector;

    (18) the receipt of applications and the preparation of data for the Rector’s Commission for incentive remuneration scheme, the Rector’s Commission for The Financial Support Scheme for Researchers and Research Teams, and for the Rector’s Scholarship Commission for Research and Research shall be set up in 2005. Material Assistance for PhD Students;

    (19) coordinating the implementation, operation, and updating of the SGGW Knowledge Base and the process of supplying this Database;

    (20) coordinating the implementation of the programmes of the Minister responsible for higher education and science addressed to the editors of scientific journals of the SGGW.
