Professor Piotr F. Hoser becomes the patron of a street in Pruszków
On 15 November 2023, Pruszków authorities and their guests celebrated one of the founders and the first dean of the Faculty of Horticulture at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Professor Piotr Hoser. The main point of the event was to name a street in Pruszków, located near the Hoser family’s farm after Piotr Ferdynand Hoser.
Piotr Ferdynand Hoser (born 22 August 1857, in Warsaw, died 4 January 1939, in Żbików) was an academic lecturer, scientist, and recipient of the honorary doctorate [the title of the doctoris honoris causa] awarded by the Warsaw University of Life Sciences and the Poznań University of Life Sciences. He was a well-known horticulturist, plant breeder, and pomologist, who significantly contributed to the field of gardening and fruit cultivation in Warsaw, and Poland.
Piotr Hoser dedicated himself to scientific and educational activities. He lectured on dendrology at the Horticultural School based at the Warsaw Pomological Garden. From 1913, he conducted Horticultural Courses, which eventually evolved into the School of Horticulture within the Society of Scientific Courses. He was a member of the Agricultural Commission of the Temporary State Council and played a crucial role in establishing the Faculty of Horticulture at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, where he taught dendrology, floriculture, and horticultural plant studies. He also contributed to dendrological research at the Zakłady Kórnickie Foundation.
From 1918 to 1923 he was the president of the Warsaw Horticultural Society, as well as the founder and president of the Polish Nurserymen Association.
Professor Hoser’s contribution was commemorated by naming some ornamental plants: Thuja occidentalis ‘Hoseri’, Taxus baccata ‘Aurea Hoseri’, Betula ‘Hoseri’, Malus x purpurea ‘Hoseri’, Syringa vulgaris ‘Professor Piotr Hoser’.
The ceremonies associated with naming a street in Pruszków after Piotr Ferdynand Hoser began at the modern and well-organized Primary School No. 10 in Pruszków. Upon the invitation of the Mayor of Pruszków, Paweł Makuch, and the Principal of Primary School No. 10, Ms. Mirosława Śliwińska, the event was attended by members of Professor Hoser’s family, the Rector of Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW), Prof. dr hab. Michał Zasada, the Vice-Rector for Development of SGGW, Prof. dr hab. Kazimierz Tomala, the Dean of the Faculty of Horticulture, dr hab. Marzena Wińska-Krysiak, as well as the Vice-Dean for Didactics, dr hab. Ewa Zaraś, the Director of the Institute of Horticultural Sciences, dr hab. Dariusz Wrona, SGGW university professor, as well as some students representing the Faculty of Horticulture, SGGW, primary school pupils, and high school students from Pruszków.
After the official welcoming of guests by the Mayor of Pruszków, Paweł Makuch, a speech given by the Rector Zasada, the lecture titled “Hoser: a Shade of Green,” and presenting the profile and work of Professor Hoser, was delivered by dr Zaraś.
After the ceremonial street sign unveiling honoring Piotr Ferdynand Hoser, all SGGW representatives visited the Hoser Family’s nursery farm.
