Prof. Wiesław Bielawski awarded Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta for his outstanding achievements in teaching and scientific activities
Professor of agricultural sciences, Rector of the SGGW, and Vice-President of KRASP in 2016-2020, Honorary Professor of the Podilsky State Agrarian Technical University in Kamieniec Podolski, Ukraine.
A recognized specialist in the field of nitrogen metabolism of cereals, and pre-harvest sprouting in grains. The creator of the original scientific school of triticale biochemistry, whose achievements are considered the most comprehensive compendium of biochemical knowledge with elements of triticale physiology and cytology.
Since 1974, he has been working as an academic teacher at SGGW, Warsaw. He performed the following functions: Head of the Department of Biochemistry (1994-2008), Vice-Dean for Didactics (1999-2002), Vice-Dean for Science (2002-2005), Vice-Rector for Development (2008-2012), Vice-Rector for Development and the First Deputy Rector (2012-2016). As the chairman of the Rector’s Committee for Development, he co-created the University’s strategy for 2011-2020. Currently, he is a professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Institute of Biology, SGGW. In his scientific and research work, he focuses on issues in the field of biochemistry and enzymology. The author of studies on glutamate dehydrogenase and glutamine synthetase in rye seedlings, the results of which were the first world reports on the newly discovered GS-GOGAT cycle in the leaves of the plant species. He conducted research on the assimilation of inorganic nitrogen in plants, physiological functions of glutathione and biochemical mechanisms of cereal resistance to sprouting.
He was the manager of 8 projects, and the main contractor of 4 research and development projects of great practical value, financed by KBN (State Committee for Scientific Research), NCN (National Science Centr), and Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
He participated in a number of domestic and foreign research internships, including at the Department of Biology at Carleton University in Ottawa, at the Institute of Biochemistry, the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, and at the Federal Center for Cereals, Potatoes, and Lipid Research in Detmold (Germany).
Professor Bielawski has published 114 scientific papers, including 57 published in the IF (impact factor) journals, and 7 in the field of didactics. The innovative research carried out in cooperation with the Institute of Biochemistry at Carleton University, Ottawa, are cited in both original and review papers due to their importance.
Professor Bielawski is the author of reviews of several KBN grants, over 150 reviews of scientific publications, and several EU projects. He prepared 12 doctoral reviews, 5 postdoctoral reviews, 4 reviews of the scientific and didactic achievements in the procedure for awarding the title of professor, 11 scientific achievements for the position of full and associate professor. He is the promoter of 11 doctoral theses, including 9 defended with honours. As the head of the Department of Biochemistry, SGGW for 5 terms, Professor Bielawski contributed to its modernization. Together with the teaching team he developed new programs of lectures and exercises for students, making a significant contribution to the implementation of new fields of study at SGGW. He managed the Faculty Teaching Centre in Łowicz and in Leśna Podlaska, where several thousand graduates obtained an agricultural engineer diploma.
During almost 50 years of work at the SGGW, he gave lectures on plant biochemistry, animal biochemistry, food biochemistry, enzymology and biochemical techniques, molecular biology, transformation of nitrogen compounds in soil and plants. He is a co-author or co-editor of 7 didactic scripts.
As the rector of the SGGW, he also intensified his efforts aimed at activating the academic staff and employees by introducing new incentive systems, and creating more opportunities to apply for grants and funds for conducting research outside the University. Bearing in mind the development of science at SGGW, he introduced annual awards for outstanding employees for scientific and teaching achievements, and the amount of his own scholarship fund has increased fourfold.
During the term of office of Professor Bielawski, the following modern research centres were established at SGGW: the Regenerative Medicine Center, the
Research and Development Center for Food and Nutrition Sciences, and the construction of the Innovative Center for Nutritional Sciences was initiated.
The building for the Independent Beekeeping Laboratory, an excellent scientific and didactic base was also put into use.
Prof. Bielawski performed many other important functions. As vice-chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland – KRASP (2016-2020), he actively participated in the work of parliamentary committees and subcommittees on the new law on higher education and science. He is a member of the Polish Biochemical Society (1992-), the Polish Botanical Society (2000-), The Monitoring Committee of the Rural Development Program for 2014-2021, Committee for Academic Entrepreneurship of the Polish Chamber of Commerce for High Technologies (2013-). In the years 2002-2005 he was the disciplinary spokesman at the Central Council of Science and Higher Education.
Since 2018, he has been a member of the jury of the “Diplomas for Warsaw” competition. The prizes are awarded to authors of the best doctoral theses and master’s theses in the field of all scientific specialties regarding the social and economic development of the capital city of Warsaw.
In 2005-2009 he was the head of the Doctoral Studies at the Faculty of Agriculture and Biology. For his scientific, didactic and organizational achievements, he was awarded: the Silver Cross of Merit, the Medal of the National Education Committee, the Honorary Badge “Meritorious for Agriculture”, the Gold Badge of Honor “For Merits for the SGGW”, the medal of the XXX anniversary of “Solidarity”, the medal “Meritorious for the Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University”, the Medal of Merit for the Grodno State Agrarian University in Belarus, the Medal of Merit for the Bialski Poviat, and the medal “Meritorious for the Skierniewice Poviat”.
He received the Kordelas of the Polish Forester – the highest distinction awarded by the General Director of the State Forests for people supporting the idea of Polish forestry, the Commemorative Badge of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration, i.e., “Medal of the Centenary of the Establishment of the Polish State Police”. He was honored with the Educational Award of the President of the Capital City of Warsaw in the “Best academic teacher” category, and awarded as a Promoter of the Polish Agribusiness.
