And … How cruel can they be? Dr Anna Gajda (DVM), a bee scientist and beekeeper from the Department of Veterinary Pathology and Diagnostics at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine, SGGW, presented the world of bees.
Well-being of bees

Since spring this year has come much earlier than usual, beekeepers had to begin the work. However, they are aware of potential low temperatures.  To start with these works, it is necessary to inspect the hive, i.e. remove everything from the hive bottom and check whether there are any parasites, or bees with some worrying infectious symptoms. Then, the appropriate treatment and care for the insects can be selected. Most of all, it is necessary to check whether the bees are alive and whether they have enough food to survive safely until their first outings from the hive and the time between the blooming of different varieties of plants.... Dr hab. Ryszard Kozera prof. SGGW, mgr inż. Aleksandra Konopka, and mgr inż. Karol Struniawski affiliated with the Institute of Information Technology, SGGW, in cooperation with dr inż. Piotr Hańczyc from the Division of Optics, Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, work on early detection technology for neurodegenerative disorders.

The project aims to develop technology for early detection of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. The innovativeness of the developing method is based on the spectral analysis of the patient’s samples. The test can identify the presence of amyloids associated with those diseases.  The research process involves fluorescent labelling with medical dyes that bind to amyloids and laser scanning the biological material. This allows them to precisely determine the amount of harmful proteins in the patient’s material.... Czytaj więcej

Let’s adapt the forest and wood sector to future challenges

The European Union has introduced challenging objectives to reduce the consequences of climate change, committing member countries to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The implemented law also imposes additional measures to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 rates. Therefore, it is necessary to look for solutions that will enable the implementation of these goals within a short time. For the forestry sector, these goals are mainly focused on increasing afforestation, however, the positive effects of the process will be observed in a dozen or more years. In this regard, it is worth considering the possibility of improving the forest supply chain in Poland to ensure the optimal use of wood and minimize the negative impact on the environment. ...
