Case Study Competition executed by SGGW
Scientists from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences introduce an idea of sustainable development in rural areas to an international group of students under a project financed by Euroleague for Life Sciences (ELLS). Students observe the effects of these activities for a local community in Sokoły, Podlaskie region.
The idea of the Case Study Competition 2022 Sustainable development, the role of society to challenges of the future can be a unique opportunity to join forces from various fields of expertise provided by ELLS universities. It is challenging, as different disciplines use different concepts, research and teaching methods. The basic idea of the CSC 2021 is to provide interdisciplinary lectures and workshops in order to take advantage of the synergy of diversified topics represented by ELLS Subject Areas. Joining a broad range of disciplines gives a possibility to attract a considerable group of students participating in the CSC 2022.
In that way, this project will contribute to targeting a large number of ELLS students, increase student and teacher exchange. This year, SGGW is implementing a project financed by ELLS, which consists of two phases:
Initially, students are to participate in online activities focused on broadly understood rural development, and then there will be an intensive one-week program carried out on-site in the vicinity of the Sokoły commune.
The phases include some lectures conducted by academic teachers from various disciplines and institutions, but most of all, the meetings with representatives of the local community, i.e., local authorities, entrepreneurs, i.e., owner of a dairy farm, or a producer of sękacz (a traditional spit cake). International students will explore the Sokoły commune during bike and canoeing trips.
Students will be organized into interdisciplinary groups (Economics, Agriculture, Land Management, Environmental Engineering, etc.). After they got basic information of the municipality, they need to prepare a project supporting local development. Then, they will have an opportunity to present a preliminary draft of the analysis and projects to stakeholders and get the feedback on their ideas.
After the visit onsite, students will have time to work out the ideas based on the feedback and also consultation at their home universities. They will present the results during the ELLS SSC 2021 in Prague, Czech Republic.
The winning team will be selected by the audience of the conference by voting and awarded by a prize of 1500 euros.
