A commemoration of Stanisław Staszic
Every year in front of the statue commemorating Stanisław Staszic, the Association of SGGW Alumni celebrates the memory of this great scientist, patriot, philanthropist and one of the founders of Marymont Institute of Agronomy.
SGGW Authorities together with the representatives of the Association of SGGW Alumni, trade unions, students, university staff, as well as students and teachers of schools named after Staszic took part in a commemoration of the achievements of Stanisław Staszic. This year’s ceremony was attended by students and teachers from the Zespól Szkół Rolniczych im. St. Staszica in Miętne and the School located in Nakło nad Notecią.
The ceremony in front of Stanisław Staszic’s stone at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences campus was attended by: SGGW Rector, prof. dr hab. Michał Zasada, Vice-Rector for Development, prof. dr hab. Kazimierz Tomala, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, dr hab. Marta Mendel, SGGW Chancellor, dr. inż. Władysław Skarżyński. The delegation of the Association of SGGW Alumni was represented by prof. dr hab. Wiesław Szulc, Ms. Grażyna Skalmierska and mgr inż. Józef Rzewuski. The ceremony was also attended by delegations of trade unions, ZNP and Solodarność operating at SGGW.
Stanisław Staszic was a leading figure in the Polish Enlightenment: a Catholic priest, philosopher, geologist, writer, poet, translator and statesman. He supported many reforms in Poland. He was also one of the founders of our University. These are just a few of the reasons why the Society of Friends of Warsaw and the Association of SGGW Alumni were strongly involved in the initiative to erect a memorial stone of Stanisław Staszic. The stone was erected in 1976, and the sculptor, Stanisław Lipski was present during this year’s ceremony dedicated to Staszic.
